Carbohydrate Requirements
Carbohydrates are the main source of cellular energy. The standard source of carbohydrate in TPN is dextrose. Each gram of dextrose provides 3.4 kcal of energy. The dextrose solutions are available as 20, 50 and 70 % solutions.
Solved Problem: How many kcal would be obtained from 1000ml of D70W (70% dextrose solution)? Approach: Each gram of dextrose provides 3.4 kcal, set up a ratio and proportion to calculate kcal provided by 1000 ml of D70W. $$ 150{70 \ g \over 100 \ ml } = {x \ g \over 1000 \ ml }; x = 700 \ g $$ $$ {3.4 \ kcal \over g } \times 700 \ g = 2380 \ kcal$$ Answer: 2380 kcal |
